The Meta Maker Wizard FAQ

By Andrew Thompson | Legacy Software , The Meta Maker Wizard

This article was originally written for The Meta Maker Wizard support page back in the days before broadband internet was widespread and downloadable files were kept to a size minimum for those on dial-up.

Question: When I run the Meta Maker Wizard I get an error message ‘Comdlg32.ocx is missing or cannot be found’. What do I do?

Answer: This program was written in Microsoft Visual Basic some years ago when 64 bit Windows operating systems weren’t available. You will certainly get this message if you are trying to run it on a 64 bit operating system such as Windows 7, 8 or Windows 10. If you chose to install 32 bit versions of either of these two operating systems you may still get the error simply because this file hasn’t been included – there is a fix for this error for both 32 and 64 bit systems. I can assure you that it is possible to get The Meta Maker Wizard to run on a 64 bit system if you are willing to take a few extra steps outlined in this separate article.

It is crucial that you make your web pages search engine friendly before you actually submit these pages to them. Whilst The Meta Maker Wizard is a very useful tool when it comes to coding your meta tags, it doesn’t actually tell you what words and phrases to write. This is something you have to decide for yourself because your website is unique in topic and content.

The web is growing at such a rate that search engine spiders constantly battle to separate the wheat from the chaff. To this end they are continually adapting their crawler algorithms to cope with the huge indexing demands placed on them, each devising their own solutions to the problems they face.

Comdlg32.ocx Error Message – The Meta Maker Wizard

By Andrew Thompson | Legacy Software , The Meta Maker Wizard

The Meta Maker Wizard will not initially run on 64 bit operating systems such as those provided in Windows 7, 8 and 10 flavours. Trying to run the program will throw up an error message. Even if you chose to install the 32 bit versions you may still get the same error because the file Comdlg32.ocx isn’t present on your system.

The error will say something to the effect that Comdlg32.ocx is missing or cannot be found.

There are two simple courses of action to take depending on whether your operating system is 32 bit or 64 bit. How do you know which version you have installed?

To know if your Windows 7, 8 or 10 is a 32 bit or a 64 bit system, just look if you have a folder C:\Windows\SysWOW64 on your hard disk. If yes, then your system is a 64 bit system.

Resurrected – The Meta Maker Wizard 2.2 PC Software

By Andrew Thompson | Legacy Software , The Meta Maker Wizard

Way back in 2000 I decided to learn to program in Microsoft Visual Basic. At that time I was experimenting with HTML; knocking up a web site here and there. I even made a website to advertise my apartment for sale when realtors and estate agents hadn’t really got to grips with how the internet could help their business. The ubiquitous Dreamweaver software was in its infancy back then and hand coding was the only way to go for those of us without big budgets, although I did dabble with an early web design software tool called ‘Hot Metal Pro’; remember that?

Back in those days getting visitors to your website was just as much an obsession as it is today and meta tags, inserted into the header code of a web page, played an important role in getting your site indexed in the search engines and more importantly getting to the top of search engine results.

What Are Web Page Meta Tags? – The Meta Maker Wizard

By Andrew Thompson | Legacy Software , The Meta Maker Wizard

Meta tags are one of the ways in which you can effectively control a summary of your site that may be used by a search engine to check it’s relevance to a users query. Although not supported by all search engines they are worth adding to your HTML documents nonetheless. Meta tags are hidden away in your code and are therefore not visible to your viewers, unless of course they choose to take a peek at your page source.

You should note that the inclusion of meta tags is no guarantee that your pages will suddenly leap to the top of every search engine listing. However, they do help describe your pages to search engines that make use of meta information.
