Comdlg32.ocx Error Message – The Meta Maker Wizard

By Andrew Thompson | Legacy Software

The Meta Maker Wizard will not initially run on 64 bit operating systems such as those provided in Windows 7, 8 and 10 flavours. Trying to run the program will throw up an error message. Even if you chose to install the 32 bit versions you may still get the same error because the file Comdlg32.ocx isn’t present on your system.

The error will say something to the effect that Comdlg32.ocx is missing or cannot be found.

There are two simple courses of action to take depending on whether your operating system is 32 bit or 64 bit. How do you know which version you have installed?

To know if your Windows 7, 8 or 10 is a 32 bit or a 64 bit system, just look if you have a folder C:\Windows\SysWOW64 on your hard disk. If yes, then your system is a 64 bit system.

For Windows XP, 2000 and Windows 7, 8 or 10 32 bit versions:

Download the Comdlg32.ocx file and save it to C:\Windows\System32

Open a Command Prompt window as ‘Administrator’ – this is extremely important otherwise the file install will fail:

Navigate to the hard drive root by typing ‘cd \’ and pressing enter. At the prompt ‘C:\’ type the following command in the window:

REGSVR32 C:\Windows\System32\comdlg32.ocx

If you see a message like that below you have successfully installed the file and The Meta Maker Wizard should run without a hitch:

DllRegisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\System32\comdlg32.ocx succeeded.

For Windows 7, 8 or 10 64 bit versions:

Download the Comdlg32.ocx file and save it to C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Open a Command Prompt window as Administrator – this is extremely important otherwise the file install will fail:

Navigate to the hard drive root by typing ‘cd \’ and pressing enter. At the prompt ‘C:\’ type the following command in the window:

REGSVR32 C:\Windows\SysWOW64\comdlg32.ocx

If you see a message like that below you have successfully installed the file and The Meta Maker Wizard should run without a hitch:

DllRegisterServer in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\comdlg32.ocx succeeded.
